Responsabilidad corporativa y el medio ambienteExplotación de recursos Petróleo, gas y carbón Con grandes corporaciones involucradas en cada aspecto de la vida moderna, el rango de daño ambiental es masivo. Una de las principales preocupaciones es la explotación de los recursos. Petróleo, gas y minería son compañías altamente lucrativas, y mientras más recursos extraen de la tierra, más crecen sus ganancias. Mientras los gobiernos nacionales controlan la cantidad que puede ser tomada, ganan grandes comisiones del proceso, entonces se niegan a frenar la extracción. Esto seguido es peor en los países del tercer mundo donde las ganancias del petróleo son fundamentales para la salud económica del país. Bolivia por ejemplo, ha sido escenario de fuertes protestas contra la venta de sus compañías extranjeras de petróleo y gas. Los recursos no renovables de energía tienen ese nombre por una razón, y cada galón de petróleo extraído de la tierra toma millones de año en ser producido. Este problema empeora al quemar estos combustibles fósiles lo cual produce dióxido de carbono y lleva a contaminación de aire. Ha habido gran negativa entre los principales productores de autos y petróleo de explorar vehículos de energía alterativa. Mientras los gobiernos han promovido la investigación de estas posibilidades, los científicos han hablado de sus frustraciones al tratar con los principales jugadores. A pesar de que Shell abrió un fondo de $30 millones de dls. Para investigar energías alternativas, es una cantidad insignificante para una compañía que vende $135 billones de dls. Normalmente hay una relación entre depósitos minerales y sitios de biodiversidad. En 1997, científicos que trabajaban para una gran compañía fueron encontrados en la Reserva de la Biosfera Maya de Guatemala. De manera similar, la expansión de minería de Exxon en Alaska es vista como un riesgo innecesario en un ambiente tan frágil y fértil. Agricultura y pesca Ganadería y pesca controlada internacionalmente es también un punto de conflicto para ambientalistas y corporaciones. Mientras los países occidentales tienden a tener estrictas cuotas, muchas corporaciones usan a los países del tercer mundo. McDonalds fue citada en un reporte del gobierno de los EEUU por su práctica de deforestación de la selva Amazona. Este ecosistema único es rebanado para hacer espacio para ganado que termina como hamburguesa. La sobre explotación lleva a muchos miles de kilómetros cuadrados de tierra previamente cultivable a convertirse en desierto cada año. La pesca comercial es el escenario de mucho debate en las conferencias de comercio internacional. Si un gobierno nacional instaura una cuota a u nivel ambientalmente sustentable, se ve bajo fuego de las compañías pesqueras apuntan a las libertades de sus competidores. Con un estimado de 1 billón de personas alrededor del mundo contando con el pescado como su fuente principal de proteína, la presión sobre las reservas de peces es enorme. Regular esta industria altamente competitiva, altamente subsidiada alrededor del mundo es una gran problema. A pesar de nobles esfuerzos, ha sido difícil producir una ley de pesca mundial fortalecida, ya que estados como Noriega y Japón citan sus tradiciones como una razón para continuar pescando especies en peligro. En Europa en particular hay un problema de barcos de pesca pirata que ingresan en aguas extranjeras a pescar. Las grandes corporaciones usan su tamaño para dominar tanto el mercado de la pesca como el de la ganadería. Al contrario a los productores locales y cooperativas cuyos márgenes de beneficio son mínimos, las corporaciones multinacionales no necesitan ser eficientes en sus prácticas. Donde un pequeño empresario debe usar cada recurso al máximo y cuidarlo para incrementar su recompensa, las corporaciones están dominadas por una cultura de agotar y avanzar. Al momento, 90% del agua potable es usada para cultivar alimentos. El sobre uso de fertilizantes, redes de arrastre para pescar y sobreexplotación son todos usados por organizaciones a gran escala. Producción de desechos/contaminación Para compañías generando millones de productos cada año, el desecho industrial es una enorme problema. Es un gran problema para la compañía ya que cuesta dinero deshacerse de ellos y es un gran problema para el medio ambiente ya que son tóxicos. Las corporaciones seguido arrojan sus desechos en países pobres, pagándoles por ello y explotando sus laxas regulaciones ambientales. Arrojan sus desechos de una forma que sería ilegal en países más ricos. En América, las compañías de energía donaron mas de 4.8 millones de dls. a la campaña de George Bush del 2000 y han visto la recompensa de inmediato. Miembros de la industria fueron incluidos en la Agencia de Protección Ambienta (EPA) que regula la ley ambiental de EEUU. En agosto del 2003, la EPA publicó una nueva ley que protege a grandes industrias de multas y costos de adaptación. Ruido y contaminación atmosférica son también medidas costosas que pueden ser inspeccionadas por grandes corporaciones. Dependiendo de sus relaciones con los gobiernos del momento, algunas corporaciones pueden salirse con la suya en cuanto a degradación ambiental. Bajo la presidencia de Bush, la persecución pública de compañías contaminadoras ha caído alrededor del 75%. La promoción de la cultura consume/desecha por parte de los mayoristas y productores también lleva a grandes cantidades de producción de desecho. Los rellenos se están convirtiendo en un problema ya que en muchos países el encontrar espacio para depositar desechos se hace complicado. Muchas de la marcas más populares del mundo son propiedad de grandes compañías multinacionales como Unilever, Procter and Gamble y Nestlé que continúa empacando de forma excesiva sus productos y sobre produciendo artículos. Algo positivo visto en muchos supermercados europeos ha sido el cobrar a los consumidores por bolsas de plástico para promover el reciclaje. Destrucción de hábitat locales y culturas Cuando las corporaciones mudan sus fábricas a un país del tercer mundo, lo hacen para ahorrar dinero. Menores salarios e impuestos son el principal incentivo, pero medidas ambientales débiles pueden ayudar. En zamba en el 2000, se aprobó una ley de minería hacía inmune a la persecución si se contaminaba. El sureste de Asia es popular por la industria textil que establece fábricas para producir calzado, blusas y shorts a bajo costo. Los gobiernos huésped están felices de tener inversión extranjera y desvían la mirada al daño ambiental. Vacío de riqueza El beneficio clave para las corporaciones de mover su industria a países del tercer mundo es bajos salarios. Los trabajadores locales no están protegidos por las mismas leyes laborales que aquellos del mundo desarrollado y son forzados a trabajar horarios épicos por un salario mínimo. Muy pocas compañías que hacen esto han mostrado un compromiso de mejorar las vidas de sus trabajadores y su comunidad. Los gerentes son traídos del mundo desarrollado y la existencia de la fábrica anima a los niños locales a integrarse a la fuerza laboral a expensas de su educación. Las noticias positivas para el medio ambiente se han dado casi universalmente en el mundo desarrollado. Riqueza y estilo de vida hacen la protección ambiental más fácil para personas de clase media. Mientras el reciclado, ecoturismo y conocimiento ecológico general son de segunda naturaleza para personas del mundo desarrollado, la lucha pura por sobrevivir en el mundo en desarrollo lo hace más difícil para las personas pobres el considerar el medio ambiente. En poco tiempo, la salud a largo plazo de nuestro planeta se ha convertido en un lujo de las clases media mientras los pobres del mundo están siendo marginados a olvidar el medio ambiente. Una distribución más justa de la riqueza resolvería esto. Si los niveles de vida de los países en desarrollo pueden ser llevados a un novel de confort (sin la cultura del consumismo) entonces tanto dinero como tiempo estarán libres para empezar a limpiar el medio ambiente. El empuje por la globalización, sin embargo, está teniendo el efecto contrario. Con subsidios en comercio y agricultura, y corporaciones explotando leyes laborales pobres, los pobres del mundo se siguen encontrando a sí mismos irónicamente demasiado involucrados en mantenerse vivos como para preocuparse por su medio ambiente. |
